Hand-held tools with sharpened ends carve lines into a flat surface, historically thin copper or steel plates. Once the desired image has been created, ink is rolled onto the surface and pushed into the incised lines. After cleaning away all excess ink not embedded in the carved lines, a piece of damp paper is placed on top of the plate and the two are rolled through a printing press. The ink that was held in the engraved lines is pulled up onto the dampened paper by the pressure of the press.
