Lithography

The basic idea behind lithography is that water and oil don’t mix. The artist draws an image with an oily substance on the surface of a slab of limestone that has been previously coated with gum arabic. Then, the artist wets the with water and applies a greasy ink to the surface. Any part where the oily drawing was done will accept the ink, but any part where there is water present will repel the ink. When a piece of paper is pressed onto the slab, the ink held by the stone will transfer to the paper.
